Test to Confirm Paternity of a Calf

What is a paternity test?

It is a Molecular Test based on DNA test to determine if a calf is ‘progeny’ of a particular ‘bull’. This test can also settle any dispute arising out of a missing calf and where ownership is to be determined. Most importantly, this test is mandatory when a daughter is to be included in the Progeny Testing A test wherein the sire’s value of transmitting milk production genes to the daughters is evaluated. program. In case a male calf is to be identified as a future breeding bull paternity test would confirm the sire side.

What material needs to be submitted to the laboratory?

In order to order this test, the farmer should send blood or hair samples from calf, mother cow and bull in question.  The test can also be done on dry blood samples.  For this put few drops of blood on to a clean absorbent filter paper, air-dry and save in an envelope. Do not keep the blood-dried filter paper in open, else it will get contaminated and the barn flies might destroy it. Many laboratories prefer oxalate / EDTA added blood samples. Such vials can be obtained from any (human/veterinary) pathology laboratory. Please ensure that you only collect 1-2 ml of blood as excess blood might clot.

What results will be communicated?

The laboratory will communicate to you

  • If the calf is ‘progeny’ of the mother cow
  • If the bull in question is ‘sire’ of the calf
